Aristotle Onassis, Maria Callas’ longtime partner, later married former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy
Plot
Maria Callas, the world’s greatest opera singer, spends her final days in 1970s Paris as she grapples with her identity and her life. Angelina Jolie and director Pablo Larraín discuss how they are connected by the true story of world-famous opera singer Maria Callas.
I’m determined to be adored
Kennedy was created in Pablo Larraín’s previous biopic, 2016’s Jackie, starring Natalie Portman. Maria Callas: Book me a table at a café where the waiters know who I am.
Maria is a good musical biopic
Close-up: Why do we need the Venice Film Festival? (2024).
It’s a beautifully shot and directed film
Angelina Jolie’s performance is excellent and I admire the way she invests herself in the role, especially in her lyrical singing. The plot is a bit disjointed and the pacing is a bit lackluster, but I still think the film is entertaining enough to enjoy, and educational about the period and opera in general.
I love the editing, and the black and white shots are gorgeous
I think it’s a solid Pablo Larrain film with Angelina Jolie in a role that could win her an Oscar. No need to waste time endlessly scrolling through the list — here’s the full lineup of new movies and TV shows streaming on Netflix this month.
